“The Story of Stuff” and “The Story of Change” are two videos that are concerned with the impact on our environment and society of consumerism. These short videos include many fun-filled animations which help us clearly understand how items are produced, distributed and discharged into the environment; as pointed out as Leonard describes the “take make waste cycled”. These videos portray the system of consumerism from the origination of the product to their final destination in our landfill sites. These videos furthermore, reveal the abuse that this consumerism is doing to our planet; and they remind us of the importance it is to keep a critical awareness on how society implements these systems.
These instructional videos used in the correct manner could be valuable in helping students become responsible citizens and thinking critically about the effects of consumerism on their future. I believe that it will be important to empower students to be deeply aware of these issues. From a personal standpoint, I know it will be extremely valuable for students to adopt the mindset that they as individuals have the power to make a different for the future of this planet.
